LUX HELSINKI

// Susanna and I took the train to the city center on Wednesday afternoon, to experience this year's Lux Helsinki. It's a light festival that lighted up the dark center of Helsinki for the 10th time this year. I've never been to Lux before, but I had heard some negative opinions about this year's festival, so I didn't go there with high expectations, but I was still a bit excited. It was pretty beautiful and fun, despite the cold weather. If you'd like to see video material (in Finnish) from Lux, take a look at Susanna's vlog on her Youtube channel tomorrow!

2017

The first week of 2018 is soon ending. I've spent the whole week unpacking, cleaning and doing other things in the apartment. A week since the move and it almost looks like someone else than a bunch of moving boxes is living there. I was supposed to post a 2017 list already before New Year's, but you can probably understand I haven't had that much time (also I've been lazy). Anyway, here is a short list about last year. Better late than never, I guess.

Describe 2017 in three words: Exciting, tough and eventful.
Did you do something you've never done before? Yes! I graduated, started studying at university, moved to Helsinki, moved to my first apartment, went to Glöggrundan, saw a horror movie at the cinema, went to a symphony concert (Harry Potter), visited a cat cafe...
What did you spend most money on? I'm pretty sure my Macbook takes the price here. Other things I spent quite a lot of money on are books, furniture and other necessary things for my apartment and food.
Were you happier or sadder than before? Sadder. Of course I had some good times here and there, but overall it wasn't a good year.
What do you wish you had done more of? Focused on my studies, been more spontanous, trusted myself, lived healthier, taken photos. These are all things I'm going to try to do more of during 2018.
What do you wish you had done less of? I definitely stressed about everything, small and big, as well as put too much thought on things that definitely wouldn't have needed it.
Favourite movie and tv-show you watched? I watched quite many tv-shows, but I think Gilmore Girls is my favourite out of them. I'm actually currently rewatching it. The only movie I remember I watched is IT, but that one was pretty good too.
The best book you read? Unfiltered by Lily Collins and Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon.
What are your plans for 2018? I don't have any at the moment. A pretty big thing is happening soon, but you'll have to wait to see what that is. ;-) Overall I'm just hoping this year will be better than last year.

what i got for christmas 2017

Christmas is over and I am very full and content after dinner and Christmas itself. It didn't really feel like Christmas this year, but I still had a good time and I hope you all did too. Today I am continuing my tradition and showing you what I got for Christmas this year.

I am moving at the end of this week (!!!), so this year I pretty much only got things I need when I move. I got a few home appliances - a microwave, vacuum cleaner, mixer and my personal favourite - the blender I had wished for!

I also got a bunch of smaller things for the kitchen, like salad servers, potato masher, bread knife, grater and some food containers. I also got a few towels and oven mitts. I'm incredibly thankful for everything I got, especially since I now basically only have to buy furniture for the apartment, so I'm saving both time and money.

Och självklart fick jag även några böcker. Tre böcker från The Mortal Instruments serien av Cassandra Clare - City of Ashes, City of Glass och City of Fallen Angels. Dessutom fick jag So Much I Want to Tell You av Anna Akana, Vad heter ångest på spanska av Michaela Von Kügelgen och Illuminae av Amie Kaufman och Jay Kristoff.

And of course, I also got some books. Three books from The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare - City of Ashes, City of Glass and City of Fallen Angels. I also got So Much I Want to Tell You by Anna Akana, Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff and a book in Swedish called Vad heter ångest på spanska by Michaela Von Kügelgen.

a christmas list

Fisk, olika lådor, julskinka, rosolli, rysk saltgurka...

That's it, pretty much.

Den första Harry Potter filmen, The Holiday, How the Grinch Stole Christmas och Home Alone.

This year I'm celebrating Christmas with
As always, I'm homehome with my mum, brother and the cats of course. My stepfather spends Christmas with his parents, and he usually comes back home while we're opening our presents.

What you can always find on the Christmas table
Fish, different casseroles, ham, rosolli salad, pickles... For me it is becoming a tradition to have porkkala ("fish" made on carrots), since I don't eat fish.

My morning looks like this
For me, it looks just like any other morning. I wake up, stay in bed for a while, maybe eat something and start getting ready. Pretty soon after that it's time to start preparing the food. And of course at some point, you have to check the tree and see if there are any presents under it already.

Three things there has to be on Christmas
Christmas shows on tv, Christmas music and cats that are begging for food and running around your feet.

This is our tradition
We don't exactly have any traditions, but we always do things in the same order - go to the graveyard, eat dinner, open presents, have coffee and something to satisfy our sweet tooth.

What I'm wearing on Christmas Eve
I usually just wear jeans or leggings and a Christmas sweater.

My favourite Christmas movie
The first Harry Potter movie, The Holiday, Home Alone and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The two first ones aren't exactly Christmas movies, but still.

What our tree looks like
This year our tree is blue and white because of Finland's 100th Independence Day. I also have a small white tree in my room, which is filled with dark purple and black ornaments with cats on them.

The worst thing about Christmas
That not everyone can celebrate Christmas the same way we do. Everyone should have the same possibility to celebrate it and get presents. Also the fact that everyone are more or less stressed around Christmas, which really is a shame.

The best thing about Christmas
What Christmas is about - good food, to spend time with family and the presents (both giving and receiving). The overall feeling of Christmas and the fact that the world lights up with Christmas lights and decorations everywhere.

packing, studying and moving

Hello from a little chaos! I haven't mentioned it here, but, I'm moving! I've been living temporarily with a relative for a few months, but I'm finally getting my own home. I'm moving in with a friend already next week! I've packed my whole room here already since I'm going homehome today, so everything is ready for the day of the move.

Packing isn't the only thing I've done lately. I've also had a lot of school stress since I've had different assignments and exams to study for. I've also been to IKEA and fixed a bunch of things for the apartment. I still have a learning diary to send in today, and tomorrow I have an appointment at Kela, but after that I'm officially on holiday. I have absolutely nothing to do for a whole week. Talk about luxury! Looking forward to just taking it easy and celebrating Christmas with my family, before it's time to move.

I'm now going to take all my stuff and run to the bus so I won't miss my train. I'm publishing a book haul soon, but I'm wishing you all a merry Christmas already now. If you don't celebrate Christmas, I hope you still have a great end of the year!

Last week's Thursday I woke up early to take the bus to Turku, where I met my friend Mimmi. Later in the day it was time for one of the biggest finnswedish events for students, Glöggrundan! We drank, as the name says, glögg (mulled wine), took shot after shot and also drank the most delicious drink ever (the white one in the picture). We also ate at Hesburger, tried to figure out where everyone studied based on the colours of their boilersuits, and sewed badgets on the boilersuit instead of going to the afterparty. It was fun! Hopefully I'm going next year again. Also, the Christmas decorations in Turku were so beautiful! Especially the ones at the market square. I could have stayed there to admire it the whole night.

new planner

Samma koncept alltså, men annorlunda utseende.

I mentioned some months ago that I've started bullet journaling, but a few weeks ago I decided I wanted to try something else. I ended up buying a binder. My plan is to fill the binder with dot pages, instead of having a notebook with dot pages. So, it's the same concept, but it looks different.

I cut out pages from my notebook and filled this binder with them instead. Why spend money on new pages when you can use up the ones from the notebook? I've now made weekly spreads for the next two weeks, as well as a monthly spread for December, since I already have things I need to write down for the month. I'll make the weekly spreads probably next week.

My bullet journaling, planning, whatever you want to call it, is still very much in the beginning so I'm still trying out different things to find out what I like the most. I absolutely love how you can make your own planner look just the way you want, make it personal, and you're definitely not stuck with the boring looking calendars from the stores.

doing it by hannah witton | book talk

In English below.

Hannah Witton is one of my favourite youtubers, and I'm interested in everything related to sex, sexuality, gener, etc., so I was very excited when this book was announced. It's already been a while since I read it, but for some reason it has taken me this long to write about it.

The book is about things related to sex, like virginity, STI's, body image, and sexuality. It's full of facts, but also Hannahs own thoughts and experiences. There's also guest writers, who have written about subjects they have more experience with than Hannah herself. Some of the subjects are biexuality (Alayna Fender), dating while trans (Riley Dennis) and sex-positive pornogrphy (Erika Lust). Personally I thought this was a really nice add to the book and I found the stories and subjects all very, very interesting.

The book is more targeted for teenagers, but I'm sure older people can get something out of it, too. The book contains all the most important subjects (as well as some other things), and it's definitely more informative than sex education in schools. I would definitely recommend Doing It!, both for younger and older readers. You might or might not learn something knew. At least you get to read about what sex education has been for three different generations and how you give consent when you're deaf, as well as refresh your own memory about the subjects in the book.

life lately

// It has, once again, been very silent on my blog. I wish the reason for the silence would be something very exciting, but I've actually not really done anything. I thought I would share some pictures from my phone from the past month.

// I had my first university test two weeks ago! Could have gone better, but at least I can always retake it. I've also realised I have way too many throw pillows.

// I had a lecture free week, so I went homehome to Hanko. Spent a whole week with these hairballs.

// I came back to a snowy and very cold Helsinki on Friday night. My friend came to Helsinki at the same time, and went back to Turku on Sunday. It was always about 7pm when we arrived at my place, so we went to Kaari to eat at Hesburger.

// The second season of Stranger Things was released on Friday, so I started the day, and my last few hours in Hanko, watching the first episode in bed with breakfast and a cat begging for food. I've also watched too much Paradise Hotel in the past month. I started watching it just to see what it is, but I'm actually enjoying it now... I also bought John Green's new book! Wasn't going to buy it yet, but I couldn't leave it on the shelf when I saw it in the bookstore.

// I have a lot of food pictures on my phone, so I feel like I have to share at least one of them here too. Here I had made sweet potato patties with a herb sauce, and some rice and a salad. On Saturday I went to Robins concert, and it was so good. I have to say though, that the amount of phones you saw was a bit depressing, and really annoying. I am now back in Helsinki as I already mentioned, and a new semester at school started this week. I can already tell that the next two weeks are going to be really stressful.

before i die

Today I am answering Sevendays bloglist "bucket list" from last week. Sevendays' bloglist is a list of questions you answer, and there's a new theme every week. A few questions have been deleted because I couldn't think of an answer to them.

Harry Styles. Paramore. Fall Out Boy.
Det här vill jag uppleva: Nyår i New York. Tokyo under körsbärsblommningen.

Where I want to travel: Japan has always, always, always been my dream.

I want to experience: New Year's in New York. Tokyo during the cherry blossom season.
A language I want to learn: Spanish and Japanese.
A sport I want to try: Surfing. I would probably be incredibly bad at it, but I can imagine how fun it would be.
Where I want to live: I can't answer Helsinki anymore, but I would love to live abroad at some point in my life. Japan would be the dream.
A book I want to read: There's too many. But I'd like to read a classic.

I don't have lectures at uni on Thursdays. So, last night I thought I would be productive today, wake up early, start the day with a jog in the forest and get a bunch of school stuff done. But, I woke up at 12, didn't want to go out in the bad weather and ate breakfast at 2pm. But some days can be like this, right?

Although my morning didn't go as planned, I still have to start working on my tasks for school. I have to write notes for our group project, and an individual task has its deadline on Sunday. I won't have time for school stuff during the weekend, as my friend is coming to Helsinki on Saturday. Fun! I should also start with an online course, as well as study for a test I have in two weeks. But I think I'll leave that for another day.

week 39

Something planned: I went home to Hanko on Thursday and spent the rest of the week there.
Something unplanned: My friend Moa sent me a message on Friday, asking if I want to meet up for a coffee at Cafferie.

This week's best: Got to spend a few days with my cat. Bought a Dolce Gusto capsule coffee machine for 60
euros cheaper than the original price. The beautiful autumn weather.
This week's worst: The lecture on Wednesdays which ends at 4.45pm. The course itself isn't exactly my favourite.

This week's sound: I've listened to Antti Tuisku's new album on repeat the whole week, as I've done the past few weeks already.
This week's picture: Don't judge, but I watched the whole first season of the Finnish Paradise Hotel. Definitely a guilty pleasure.
This week's text: I haven't read anything this week, but I've written three tasks for school. One group task on Monday, and two individual tasks on Tuesday and Sunday.

The idea for this post is a mix between this post from Matilda's blog and this post

books i took with me when i moved

// As you might have already figured out, I've moved from Hanko because of studies in Helsinki. I will write a blog post more about that, but I don't know when yet. I'm currently living with my aunt in my cousin's old room until I find my own apartment. Since I couldn't take all my one hundred books with me, I had to choose only a few to take. I like watching "books I took with me to college/university"- videos on YouTube, so I wanted to make my own version of it.

The Girl with Seven Names by Hyeonseo Lee / The Power of Personality by Sylvia Loehken / Doing It! by Hannah Witton / Unfiltered by Lily Collins

// I wanted to take both fiction and non-fiction books with me, so these are my non-fiction ones. I was reading Doing It when I moved, so obviously I took it with me, too. Unfiltered is the next book on my TBR, and the two other books I chose simply because they're books I really want to read in the near future.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak / Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov / Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison

// These two fiction books were the only ones I was sure, or almost sure, I wanted to take with me.

The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon / All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven / We Were Liars by E. Lockhart / The Drowning of Arthus Braxton by Caroline Smailies

// I was actually only supposed to take two of these with me. The Drowning of Arthur Braxton for sure, and the other one I tried to choose based on their grades on Goodreads, but as you can see, I ended up putting them all in the box anyway.

// I also wanted to take at least one cookbook with me, in case I need some inspiration for food some day, and my Wreck This Journal came with me in case I get bored and need something to do.

stationery haul

/ I mentioned some posts ago that I'm planning to start a bullet journal. This of course meant buying some new stationery, which I'm now going to share with you.

Två olika ark av post-it lappar, Tiger. Stabilo överstrykningspennor i sex olika pastel färger, Adlibris. Fineliner pennor i olika färger, LIDL.

/ Two different blocks of post it notes, Tiger. Stabilo hightlighters, Adlibris. Fineliners in six different pastel colours, LIDL.

/ In August I ordered two tombow brush pens in red and black, from jeminalovespaper. It's surprisingly hard to write with them to get the beautiful text you want, but one day I will master it! I also visited her shop with Susanna a few weeks ago. There I bought two sheets of her stickers, as well as a drawing pen.

/ From Tiger I also bought a clipboard. Finally I found one, after months of searching. And last but not least, my bullet journal, from Adlibris.

/ Would you be interested in blog posts about my bullet journal? How I use it, what my weekly/monthly spreads look like and stuff like that?

homemade crisp bread | recipe

Based on the results from my survey, and after a lot of thinking, I've decided to start writing my blog in Swedish again. But don't worry! All posts will be in both Swedish and English, and longer posts will have a link to an English post, to avoid posts getting very long. This way both my Swedish and English speaking readers will be able to continue reading my blog. If you still want to answer my survey, click here.

/ I thought I would share a recipe I always use when making homemade crisp bread. I've never been a big fan of crisp bread, until a few years ago when I first tasted this one made with a bunch of seeds. It goes with anything, but I especially love it with some hot soup. This bread is so good, and so easy to make too!

WHAT YOU NEED
2 dl majsmjöl / cornmeal
¾ dl solrosfrön sunflower seeds
½ dl linfrön / flax seeds
½ dl sesamfrön sesam seeds
½ dl pumpafrön pumpkin seeds
2½ dl kokat vatten boiled water
½ olja oil
salt

150 grader i varmluftsugn, ca. 50-60 minuter. / Convection oven 150 degrees, for about 50-60 minutes.

HOW TO DO IT Det enda du behöver göra är att blanda alla ingredienser i en skål.

/ The only thing you need to do is to mix all the ingredients in a bowl. First the cornmeal and all the seeds, then add the boiled water and the oil. I always use olive oil, but any other oil probably works too.

/ When you've mixed all the ingredients into a batter, spread it on a baking tray, so the thickness is about the same all over. Add some salt before putting in the oven.

/ In about an hour the crisp bread is ready to eat. Sometimes it's done already in 50 minutes, sometimes it takes a bit over an hour. The bread is done when it has hardened and has a beautiful brown colour.
The recipe is also easy to change, if you feel like you want to do that! Add less of a specific seed, more of another, or more of the cornmeal. You can also add some other seed, I sometimes add a few tablespoons of chiaseeds!

cat café helsinki | helkatti

Last week, on Thurday, when I had a day off from university, I met my friend Susanna. She had booked a table for us at the cat café in Helsinki, Helkatti, so we spent some time there eating, talking and petting some cats.

I ordered a cappuccino and a croissant filled with lettuce, basil, tomato and mozzarella, while Susanna ordered a salad. We decided to share a cake assortment with three different, small cakes. It was all very good, would recommend.

There were about 8 cats I believe, most of them were sleeping for the most part but they all (?) did show up at some point. The café itself was very cute and cosy, and being surrounded by cats was a nice add to it. After the café we went to some shops at the centre, before heading to the jeminalovespaper shop, after which we both went our own ways again. Overall it was a nice day, and seeing Susanna again after years(!!) was fun.

Psst! If you haven't yet, would you be so very kind to give your answers to my survey here? I would really appreciate it!

about this week

Psst! When you have read this post, please go to my survey by clicking here (opens in a new window). I would really appreciate your answer, as it gives me the chance to know how, and if I should improve my blog. It only takes two minutes. Thank you!

Plans for this week: I'll probably be studying quite a bit the whole week. I'll also meet a friend, maybe go explore some areas in Helsinki and hopefully get the last of my things unpacked. I finally got my bullet journal last weekend, so I'll probably be starting that, too.
Something positive about this week: I'm seeing one of my friends for the first time in years!!! And the fact that I'm starting my university studies is quite exciting, too.
Something negative about this week: I won't see my cat this week since I'm not going home to Hanko this weekend.

Food plans for this week: Something cheap, fast, easy but delicious. I've already eaten pasta twice this week, so maybe I'll keep eating it. For the weekend I might make something more exciting, maybe vegan wienerschnitzel? Hmm...
Book/writing plans for this week: No writing plans here, but I'd really want to finish Doing it by Hannah Witton! I've been stuck on it the whole summer, and I only have a few pages left.
Tv/movie plans for this week: I've been catching up with tv-shows for the past few months, so I'll continue to do that. I have two episodes left of Teen Wolf, and next on my list is Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Music for this week: I actually really want to find some new songs to add to my playlist! I've been listening to the same few songs on repeat for a good while now.

Blog post plans for this week: This is most likely my second and last post for this week.
A wish for this week: I'll have a good start to my studies and I'll fall in love with bullet journaling. As well as just having a great week and being happy.

I got the idea for this list from Soufie.

how to survive matriculation exams

During the third year of upper secondary school in Finland, it's for most of us time for matriculation exams (ylioppilaskirjoitukset, studentskrivningar). I had my exams a year ago and this spring, and for me personally, it was an incredibly stressful time. But just as thousands of others every year, I survived it, and I promise you'll too.

I wasn't going to write a blog post about this, but I've wanted for a long time and now I was inspired to do it so I decided to try to get something smart written in a post. This is a very long post, but I hope it will give you something to think about and help you in any way.

I'm also in no way a professional, these are just some things I find important based my own experience. Since we're all different, some or any of these might not work for you. It's just something I personally found that helped me, or would have helped if I had done it.

Before the exam

1. Work hard during courses. If your exams are in a week, this one is already too late for you. If you're still in your first or second year, you still have time for this. You probably already in the beginning of your first year have an idea of what subjects you'll be taking your exams in, so when you're taking courses in those subjects, actually read the books and study properly. You don't have to get 10 in every course, but as long as you've studied properly you'll be fine, because when you're studying for the matriculation exam, everything will feel very familiar and it will be easier to remember stuff. If you haven't studied properly, a lot of the things will feel new and you'll probably need to study more to learn. Trust me, I have experience from this.

2. Find out how you learn best. Some people learn by just reading once or twice, while some need to make notes too. You might find it easier to learn when your notes are colourful. You might need to discuss the subject with someone else to learn yourself. You get the deal. Hopefully you already know how you learn best, if not - find out! By knowing this, you can and should take advantage of it and you'll find it easier to study for the exams.

3. Start studying in time and study smart. Do not start two weeks before the exam! You might get through all the books, but you'll most likely not actually learn much. Also, don't read an entire book in a day, but instead read a few chapters a day. I'd advise you to plan and make a schedule for your studies, so you know how much time you need to get through everything and how much you need to read in a day etc. Of course, for some people planning just doesn't work, but if you're not one of those people I'd recommend to try out planning. This way you can also make time for other activities and know how much time you have for them without losing studying time.

4. Write notes. Even if you don't need notes to learn, I'd recommend writing some notes, for example summaries of each chapter or big thing or just the most important things. Then, some days before the exam you can look through the notes and repeat the most important things instead of looking through all of your books trying to repeat stuff that way.

5. Look at older exams. You've probably already worked with old exams, but it's actually really helpful to do so. You'll get an idea of what types of questions tend to be asked, how the questions are asked and what types of questions there are. You might also notice a pattern in the exams, for example that they ask every year about something that's currently popular or talked about. Also look at the answers, so you'll learn little about how detailed you need to be, what they're really asking about (sometimes, most of the times, you'll need to think outside the box) and stuff like that.

6. Ask for help. If there's something during the course you don't understand, ask your teacher. If you never asked, and find it hard when studying for the exam, ask now. It's not too late to ask, and you might still learn it. Don't be afraid to ask, it's literally your teachers job to help you and explain things you don't understand. The thing you're finding hard, might just be asked in the exam and then you're just going to be very annoyed about it when you didn't ask about it. But, if the exam is in just a few days, and there's something you never learned during the three years of school, you probably won't learn it during this last week either. Focus on something else instead.

7. Don't focus on small details. If you on the morning of your exam get anxious because you can't remember the name of that weird bird, calm down. You will not need to know that. When studying, don't focus too much on the details, learn the bigger picture instead, because that's what you're going to need to know.

8. Keep the day before the exam free. It's very easy to get stressed about the exam and feel like you don't remember anything, but try to not think about it too much and not looking at the literature the day before. Focus on doing other, fun, things the day before, if you're finding it hard to not focus on the exam too much.

During the exam

1. Breathe. If you're really nervous or stressed, try to relax. Breathe. Sometimes when you're really nervous you tend to forget things, and that's not what you want at that point. You might look at the exam and think "I can't answer any of these questions", again - breathe, relax. It'll come to you. Soon you'll be writing as crazy.

2. Listen to the instructions. The instructions are so very important, so listen to what the teacher/s say and follow the instructions you get.

3. Write notes. Before you start writing your essay on the "official" papers, write notes on the "unofficial" ones. You might come up with new information while writing the notes, and you can easily fit it into the final essay. If you're already writing the essay it might be harder to make it fit into the text.

4. Bring good snacks with you. I'd recommend something salty as well as something sugary. Don't forget the drink! Water, juice, lemonade... Whatever you feel like you want. You're going to be there for at least three hours, but most of the exams will take you longer. Even if you're not hungry, eat! It's good for your brain, and you'll have more energy to think.

5. Take breaks. Even if you feel like you don't need it, trust me, you do. Take short breaks between every essay to give your brain some time to rest (and your hand). Drink, eat, go to the bathroom, just sit and look around. I would definitely recommend bathroom breaks at least once. You don't need to actually use the bathroom, but at least you get to move and stretch your body, because let's be real, your body will not be happy when you've been sitting for six hours straight. By leaving the room you also get some new air into your body and you have time to take some deep breaths before going back to write some more essays.

Mental

1. Try not to stress. If you're anything like me, you'll be incredibly stressed about these exams, probably already months in advance. Try not to be. You really do not have anything to be stressed, scared or anxious about. Of course, it's very easy for me to say this, but when your exams are over, you'll understand.

2. You do not have to spend every waking hour studying. Don't feel bad when you do something else than study, you need your free time too. You'll pass the exam even if you haven't studied 24/7 for two months straight. But although you don't have to spend all your time studying, you probably shouldn't spend only an hour a day studying either, unless of course you feel like that works for you.

3. The results don't define you, your life or your brain. Who cares if you get full L's? Who cares if you only get A's? Who cares if you get one of all grades? No one. Absolutely no one. None of the grades define you or how smart you are. Getting A doesn't mean you're stupid, not in any way.

4. You will most likely not need good grades for anything. You will not be asked in a job interview in 20 years how many L's you got in your matriculation exams. Of course, having only the best grades look nice on your papers, but literally no one is going to care. The only time you might have use of the grades is when applying to university, when you might get some extra points from some specific subjects based on your results. But even then, the entrance exam is more important. For example, I didn't even take any optional courses in social studies, let alone took the matriculation exam, so I didn't get any extra points from it, but I still got into the school.

5. You can always retake the exam. Sometimes it happens that you know you can do better than the grade you got. Relax! Even if you can do better, you don't always have to prove it. But if you really want to, you can always retake the exam later. I retook the exam in health education, just to prove myself I can do better. Of course, it felt good to get a better grade, but I'll never do anything with it, so now it just feels like I made a really stupid decision by retaking it.

6. It's a lot about technique, not how smart you are. You might have had 10 in every course in English, so when you get E instead of L in the exam, you'll probably feel disappointed. Don't. The matriculation exams in languages have more to do with technique than your actual skills. In other subjects, it might be less about technique, but it still doesn't have anything to do with how smart you are. I took my exam in health education in autumn, and I had read all three books and highlighted the most important things. I retook it in spring, got two grades better, and I had only looked through about one and a half of the three books. I literally got a better grade from studying less.

7. Your life doesn't depend on your grades. You won't die, you won't lose your family and friends, you won't be alone for the rest of your life if you don't get the best results. You won't end up as a king or queen, you're not getting a ticket to eternal life, you're not better than everyone else, if you only get the best grades. At the end, the matriculation exams are really stupid, and they don't prove anything except for just that.

Good luck with your exams! And remember, your grades don't define you.

lunch at cafferie hanko

Last week, a few days before my move(!!), I went to Cafferie (maybe better known as Café Regatta as it was called before) with my friend Moa. I had offered to buy her lunch as a part of her birthday present. Unfortunately they were out of the chanterelle soup by the time we went there (it's the best!), but instead we took a salad each. My friend went for an asian sesame salad with chicken, and I decided to go out of my comfort zone and took the vegan one.

The asian sesame with chicken salad.

My vegan salad. It consisted of lettuce, cucumber, sundried tomatoes, guacamole, kidney beans, pumpkin seeds, and balsamic vinegar, topped with some parsley. The reason I said I stepped out of my comfort zone is because I'm not a fan of beans or avocado, and I had never really tried sundried tomatoes. I'm glad I chose this one though, because the tomatoes were the only thing I couldn't eat.

If you're ever in Hanko or Ekenäs during lunch time, I strongly recommend trying Cafferie. They have super good lunches and their salads are always available to order. They also offer cakes, which I actually haven't tried myself, but I'm sure they're just as good as their food. The café is by the sea, so besides the good food, you also get a pretty great view.

spring and summer book haul

When you own about 80 unread books, what is the one thing you need more of? Yes, that's right. More books. I placed an order consisting of five books earlier this summer, and besides that I've also bought some other books here and there. All of these books are bought between April and July, except for The Sun Is Also a Star which I bought already in January.

Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth / Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling / Hollow City and Library of Souls by Ransom Riggs / The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon / The One Memory of Flora Banks by Emily Barr

Unfiltered by Lily Collins / Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison / Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver / We Were Liars by E. Lockhart / The Drowning of Arthur Braxton by Caroline Smailes

Lily Collins is my biggest woman crush, favourite actress and overall a person I really love. When I heard she's writing a book, oh you have no idea how excited I got! I decided to wait a bit until I bought it, so when I decided to buy some books this was the first one I added to the basket. I haven't read it yet, but it's next on my TBR.

I read Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children earlier this year (link to review, opens in a new window), and when I went to Helsinki a few days after, I decided to look for the other two books in the series. I found them, and now they're sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read. As I mentioned in the review, I'm excited to see how the story continues. Not sure when I'll be getting to these though.

Look at this one! It's the 20th anniversary, Slytherin edition of the first Harry Potter book. There's some information about the house, but otherwise it's just the regular book on the inside. The outside though, so so so beautiful. And so hard to get a good picture of.

This one has been on my "to buy" list for a very long time. I wasn't familiar with this book until summer 2015 when youtuber Luke Cutforth announced he needs help funding his idea to make this book into a movie, and ever since I've wanted to read it. I finally own it, and I'm excited to read it in the near future, hopefully before the movie is finished.
